A Beautiful Hindu Garden Wedding....

When I first got the call from an old friend to tell me her daughter was getting married in their garden, I was excited because my old friend has fantastically eclectic taste and I LOVE doing events in her little garden. Then I learned that the marriage would be a Hindu ceremony and the excitement started to really build.

Entering into the garden guests were greeted by Buddhas festooned in Roses...
Welcome into the front courtyard for the ceremony...

Garlands of traditional Hindu style orange Marigolds & Jasmine were imported from India

The ceremony itself was under a canopy of Wisteria tented with silk...

The sun made an appearance highlighting the intense colours of the flowers...

just breathtaking.

The Marigolds from India are huge!

Orchids, Roses, Crocosmia, and Garlic are arranged in a mirrored vessel

Everywhere you turn...

another beautiful statue.

Love this little seating area in the front courtyard...

Then through the house...

This is called a Glamellia...they first became popular in the 1940s and are made up of hundreds of Rose Petals to create one giant blossom.

And into the backyard where the mood was more serene with hundreds of candles and thousands of Rose petals scenting the air....

The Couple's Monograms made of chartreuse button Mums float in the pool...

Love this antique Tibetan door and Buddha that are a permanent fixture of the backyard

and more Glamellias float in the pool...these are my new favourite thing!

This may just be my favourite wedding ever.

(But I say that after almost every wedding...ha!!!)

Hot Child in the City.... Peonies and Garden Roses.

Those were the days my friend.

For those of us old enough to remember Nick Gilder in 1978, his song Hot Child in the City brings back all kinds of crazy summer memories full of sights, sounds, and scents. For some reason these Peonies, Callas, and Garden Roses bring back the glory days of "Summer Sundays" at Empire stadium in the late 70s. Vive le Supertramp!

Peonies in Coral and shades of Pink, with Callas and Roses. Everything here is grown LOCALLY. Can I get an Amen?
Imported David Ausin Garden Roses "Yves Piaget" and "Sunset" are mixed with Cherry Brandy Roses and Locally grown Peonies for a deliciously fruity summer colour mix.
The Yves Piaget are heavenly scented. ( like pure Rose Oil... Heady and delicious) If you want a Peony look during off-season, this is a Peony shaped Scented Rose to die for.

A Formal Affair....

With a grand Entrance.

Maybe it's just the PURE JOY in these flowers that takes me back to the innocent days of the 70s. Whatever it is, I like it.

Lorelei's Bridesmaids carried a mix of soft pink and ivory Peonies..... Like a soft pink dream.
The Bride's Bouquet was a cloud of Ivory Peonies.
The Bride is a Grade One teacher, and her 15 girls are in white gowns with pink sashes and carrying "Fairy Wands" of Pink Peonies and ivory satin ribbon.

The Groomsmen wore Pink peonies & Hyacinth Blossoms.

Happy Easter!

I haven't had time to blog for ages! I have been updating my Facebook page regularly as it is much quicker to add photos of our new work on a daily basis, so to check out our latest work click on the FB link on our home page. In the meantime.... I Love this colour combination of Tiffany Blue and Daffodil Yellow. Especially at Easter...

Another of my favourite flowers in the Spring are these sweet tiny little blue blossoms, commonly known as Grape Hyacinth, or Muscari. These are from my own garden. They are available commercially but very expensive...about $3/per tiny little stem. But If you LOVE them, they are worth every penny.

Our signature Easter bouquet for 2011. A mix of Roses, Hyacinth, and real hand dyed, blown out eggs with pearl detail. Available in a range of colours. Starting at $75.00 as shown.

Anyone who knows me, knows I have a total infatuation with tiny blue eggs. We blow these tiny little Quail eggs out & hand dye them blue. 5 for $10.00

These are FABULOUS displayed in little vases or glasses like my own vintage hi-ball collection pictured above.

We love using our hand blown eggs in bouquets and arrangements.

I searched everywhere for a "birdsnest" style basket to display all our eggs in. National and local suppliers only had a sad supply of mini twig nests with fake eggs or birds glued inside....No Thanks! I ended up buying an assortment of pussywillow wreaths and twig brooms, and added some fresh weeping Birch. Presto....Giant Birds Nest. What a fabulous Centrepiece!

Now, there's a great DIY Easter decor project!

Jenn & Chris get married at The Vancouver Club

These photos are graciously supplied by Sakura Photography, and are from the wedding of Jenn & Chris last year at The Vancouver Club. The ceremony was in the foyer...which I just LOVE...Romantic draping creates a beautiful background for the ceremony and also blocks off the area of the club that will be used for dancing later in the evening...

The Bridesmaids carried very soft celery green Roses, bound in Periwinkle satin fabric to match their gowns.

Jenn & Chris signing the all important documents. I find Bride's often feel they need to order an arrangement for this table, but usually using the Bride's bouquet is just perfect....
Jenn carried a lush and flowing hand tied bouquet of white Phalaenopsis Orchids bound in satin to match her gown. Tucked into the back of the bouquet is a photo of Jenn as a baby, with her favourite Uncle who passed away. He was there in her heart.

The best of 2010...October, November, and December

Autumn settles in...

as the days start getting shorter and the light gets softer, sunset tones of gold, orange, red, and hot pink are some of my favourites. Cymbidium Orchids, Mokara Orchids, Ajumah Orchids, Calla lilies, and Roses are some of the most beautiful flowers available in October, November, and December.

In mid October we had a beautiful wedding at The Tea House Stanley Park. The Bridal Bouquet was a textural mix of Dahlias & Roses.
Dahlias are usually only available until late September, but in 2010 we had them all the way through to late October. (Lucky for this Bride!)

November...a 50th Anniversary party of winter whites, silver, and crystal.

These are the same slate grey linens we used in September with floral accents of bright red....here used with white, silver, and crystal chandeliers, they are brand new look...

December...The party season!

LOVE this Alessi collander filled with red Carnations and shiny red baubles...

For centrepieces this year, I was really loving the GlamOrganic look of Birch and Baubles.

So, there it is...the year that was 2010.

It was a spectacular year full of Olympics, Events, Films, Weddings, and Parties.

May 2nd, 2011 is my 19th anniversary of opening my design studio/store and each year has been full of new ideas, new clients, new challenges, and thankfully new varieties of flowers available commercially which keeps things exciting and fresh.

We are already working on some fantastic events and weddings coming up soon, and are booked solid for every long weekend in 2011.

Best of 2010....July, August, September

The long, hot days of Summer.....

This bouquet was my very favourite bouquet of July 2010. The mix of hot summer colours and juicy textures is the very essence of Summer...the sun kissed fruity tones of yellow, chartreuse, bright oranges and pinks just make my heart sing.

We still had Peonies and Tulips in early July 2010....now there's a blessing.

In mid July we had our first Dahlias arrive just in time for this colourful wedding at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

LOVE the groupings of colour down the length of the 50 ft. long dining tables....

In August we worked on an Italian themed event using she summer bounty of Grapes, Pears, Apples, Plums, and Crabapples.

Champagne Grapes arrived at my supplier just as I went to choose all the fruit we needed for this event...I think the different sizes of Grapes added to the textural beauty of the pieces we made...

In the heat of Summer, sometimes pure white has a cooling effect. This reception would be just as beautiful in Winter too...

Roses and Hydrangea...two of Summer's most delectable flowers.

Other popular Summer flowers are Lisymachia and Snapdragons....My favourite foliage of the summer is Raspberry Cane which I grow on a farm in Langley. In 2011 we will be doubling the harvest size & should have availability from June through August.

I just love this loose and casual mix of Summer flowers....Delphinium, Hydrangea, Casablanca Lilies, Roses, Snapdragons, Lisymachia, and Bells of Ireland.

A more formal setting of all whites is this Persian Wedding Sofreh where we have used masses of Dendrobium Orchids around the bases of the beautiful gold candelabras. Here the arrangements are more formal masses of whites with less green....

I LOVE this delicate and feminine Bouquet of individually wired Dendrobium Orchids....Although this was made in early September, these flowers are available year round....would be beautiful in any season!

Well, I guess it's a little nepotism, but I have to say that my favourite wedding of 2010 was that of my brother & sister-in-law in mid September. Rosalin carried a classic, timeless bouquet of red Roses to match those fabulous shoes...The overall colour theme was stone grey and bright red, and the rainy grey weather actually worked with the colours!

Spring....The BEST time of the year!

Spring 2010 was full of so many beautiful weddings, and so much PINK! We were featured in Grace Ormonde wedding Style magazine which was truly an honour and one of the highlights of my career....followed by a bouquet editorial feature in Wedluxe Magazine.

Brix Restaurant courtyard...the fabric, the flowers, the chandelier. It all just sets the mood for the wonderful Nicole & Jamie

This Tabletop design was featured in Grace Ormonde wedding Style Magazine.
Fall/Winter 2010 Issue. Shot in April, it involved hundreds of feet of strung Hyacinth, hundreds of Peonies, and a whole hell of a lot of white Rose petals.

For the Winter/Spring 2010 issue of Wedluxe Magazine. I still think this is quite possibly the most beautiful bouquet I have ever made... Cattleya Orchids and deconstructed Mokara Orchids.

This strung Hyacinth Bouquet was also featured in Wedluxe Magazine. Hyacinth is available locally from December through April....I am so looking forward to working with Hyacinth blossoms again this year!

This bouquet was one of the Bridesmaids bouquets from the above wedding....again, these colours just make me happy to work with flowers!

Peonies.....Mmmmm.

It doesn't get better than Peonies. The colours, textures, and scents continue to astound me with their beauty, even after 35 years of working with flowers! Every year we all eagerly anticipate all the local varieties available, usually from April through June.

Here, white Peonies, pink Hydrangea, and Birch, are used along the length of the dining tables. I Love this organic and casual look on longer narrow tables....

My theory with wedding flowers is that they should be BEAUTIFUL. Not trendy or overly manipulated, just romantic and beautiful, reflecting the Bride's personality and style....

These are just a few of my favourite images from Spring 2010 Weddings....We have already booked some really exciting weddings for Spring 2011 and I can't wait for all the Spring flowers to start arriving, it really is my favourite time of year!

2010 was a very good year! After the global meltdown of late 2008 and 2009...January 2010 started off with a boom! Olympic related corporate accounts, private parties, our regular accounts, TV shows, and preparing for Valentine's Day. Yikes.

I love this photo of the white Tulips & Seashells. it is just so restful and feels like peace.

February was the start of The 2010 Winter Olympics, during which we were privileged & honoured to be the IOC florist, decorating the IOC Olympic Club, a private club for members and visiting dignitaries. The freedom we had in designing for the IOC was particularly exciting,allowing us to showcase locally grown product...

An Olympic ring of white Roses crowning a mass of locally grown white Orchids, all displayed in a Martha Sturdy spun brass vessel, on her uplit resin table. We used martha Sturdy vessels throughout the club, and we have developed a wonderful relationship since, selling her beautiful resin at the store.

An Olympic ring of white Roses crowns a lush mix of locally grown Cymbidium Orchids.
Another great client was Shaw Cable.....one week it was Carnation Balls....
Next week it was masses of Orchids.

Just LOVE all these textures.
2010 was such a great year for us.....I had to split it up into 4 quarters!

I love these different shades and textures of green...mossy Green Trick Dianthus, Evergreen Pine and Cedar, Chartreuse matte baubles and Chironne Mums, all arranged in Birch Bark.

Here we added green Brazillia Berries & used white glass vessels.

Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine Fall/Winter 2010

I am so thrilled & proud to be a part of both "The Bouquet" AND "The Tabletop" editorial features in the current issue of Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine! This is a high end wedding magazine based out of eastern USA (Rhode Island) which I have loved over the years for the inspirational editorials & featured weddings including a brilliant group of vendors...gown designers, jewelry designers, flower designers, photographers, event decor companies, catering & cakes, everything good & higher end in wedding design....

In each Issue Grace has Bouquet & Tabletop Editorials which feature designs by chosen wedding Designers and Floral Designers.

When I was asked to do this table I knew I had to work with the very best & I chose to work with Simon Cooksley Event Design. I have known Simon since he was in the Visuals Dept. of Holt Renfrew Vancouver about 12 years ago. (At that time I also had a boutique within Holt Renfrew during the Christmas Holiday Season, and had been the resident florist for many years.)
Simon now owns "Simon Cooksley Event Design" and is the most fabulous, tasteful, meticulous, perfectionist designer I know.
Above is my model extraordinaire...Philip Ireland, GM of The Vancouver Club. Philip is holding my Bouquet of Ivory peonies, Roses, and Calla Lilies, with long strands of hand strung Hyacinth blossoms.
I love our neutral taupe/grey comfy arm chairs. Just so luxurious! (I have to admit I have seen enough Chivari chairs over the past 10 years to last me a lifetime.) We were so in sync on the perfect silk fabric & colour for the table linens, & Simon had the perfect box pleated custom linens delivered within a week. I heart Simon Cooksley.

Peonies, Peonies, Peonies.....

I used Martha Sturdy white resin square vessels lining the table in 2 sizes....also the lamps had mirrored glass bases...all filled with Peonies in various shades of pink. This created a storyline of different heights & sizes along the length of the table. The ivory Rose petals are (painstakingly, haha) placed in perfect Paisley designs, in an impromptu salute to my favourite artist, Prince.

Hyacinth blossoms are dripping from Simon's beautiful square white Lamps.

The Hyacinth blossoms mirror the Bridal Bouquet I made....

The silverware, crystal, and table settings were all from Atkinsons. Now, that was another fun shopping trip with Simon! Could it all be more perfect?

Here is a sneak peek into Jackie & Paula's Wedding

July 24th 2010 at The Vancouver Art Gallery...The Current Exhibit... Coincidence?

LOVE IT!
This was an Italian Wedding & the couple wanted a natural garden feel for the larger arrangements...
The Bride's colours were Hot pink, Orange, Magenta, and Chartreuse.
LOVE this mix... Roses, Hydrangea, Dahlias, Asclepias, Phalaenopsis Orchids
and Raspberry Cane!

There were three different styles of centrepieces running the length of each of the 50 ft. long tables...

There were shorter arrangements of Dahlias & Roses in Hot Pink & Orange, And taller vases full of chartreuse Hydrangea,
And finally, Magenta Phalaenopsis Orchids in a medium tall vase.

The three different heights & styles created a beautiful story down the length of the tables

Each Centrepiece has a white light box underneath so as the evening progresses the light boxes will create a glow in the water of each vase, illuminating the stems.

I LOVE STEMS.

The 5 Gentlemen wore Hot Pink Roses with Sempervivum & English Ivy leaves...

And the 5 Ladies wore Bright Orange(Yes, that is the real colour!) Roses detailed with light grey chiffon ribbon & slate grey pearl Bracelets.

These photos were all taken during a very rushed set-up (45 minutes... Whew!) so I didn't have a chance to photograph either of the Brides or the final set-up! In a perfect world I'll be able to get some from the photographer, the superfabulous Jennifer Picard.

Feeling Green...

Today I was shopping for flowers (yes, I have a cool job.)

& I was just SO really loving all the green....

ALL THESE TEXTURES & SHAPES...

Long & cool & smooth stems of Garlic, tender & rough light green stems with fluffy fiber optic tufts of grass. Thick, mossy Green Trick Dianthus, and crazy long stemmed bright green fresh Lotus Pods.

Now I need to go water my lawn...

Keep it GREEN.

One good thing about living in "RainCity" is that we have the perfect growing condition for Hydrangea....

The smaller green & ivory florets are "Annabelle" hydrangea. These grow from small bright green clusters of florets into huge ivory round clusters as they mature. The lighter green larger florets are "Limelight" and change from a lighter green to ivory as they mature, and grow in a long conical cluster of florets as opposed to the traditional round shape.

As the season changes from late Spring to early Summer, Hydrangea will become available locally in many shades of Blue,Purple,Pink, Chartreuse, and White/Ivory....Immature Charteuse Annabelle Hydrangea...in a tall clear vase with green beach glass.

Peonies & Orchids... White "Duchesse de Nours", soft pink "Sarah Bernhart" , and stronger pink "Jules Ely" Peonies combined with "Jungfrau" pink throated white Cymbidium Orchids
That's my arm & pearl bracelet holding the bouquet.
I always wear a heavy bracelet on my left wrist to balance the weight
of the metal rods in my right wrist.
I had to have these "installed" after breaking my right wrist/arm into 52 pieces on March 29th, 2006. At the time I was advised that I would only get back about 50% use of my right wrist and hand...
Well, after 4 years I have about 90%-95% range of motion & ability.
So there. Ha.

Flowers for Science Fiction...

Over the past 18 years I have had the good fortune to do the flowers for many Science Fiction Movies & TV Shows filmed in Vancouver.... Congratulations to my current favourite show to work on..."V" which has just been picked up for another season and will be back filming at the end of the summer.

The Alien Mothership is a scream to design for although working with a "green screen" does present a special set of challenges!

I thought this would be the perfect flower to feature on May Day....Muguet. In France it is tradition to give gifts of Muguet on the first day of May.

This is also a very special flower for me...it has been one of my favourite flowers since I was a little girl & brings back many memories of my childhood....When my own Mom passed away on March 29th, 2007, my sister & I split up the Lily of the Valley from her garden & planted it in our own gardens. Now each year it is like Mom comes back to visit us through her little fragrant flowers each Spring. What a beautiful way to be remembered....

I am happy to say my little patch of Mom's Muguet is growing by leaps & bounds each year. It is a great spreading bulb and wonderful for your early Spring cutting garden.

WHY I LOVE LIVING IN VANCOUVER...

I am so lucky to have access to locally grown Orchids like this beautiful chartreuse with crimson throat Cymbidium variety grown in Chilliwack, B.C. I also have year round access to magnificent imported South American Roses available in hundreds of colours and varieties. In the photo above are Cherry Brandy (orange), Latina (yellow) and CherryO (Watermelon) Roses.

All of our imported Roses come from farms who meet or exceed safe environmental & fair employment standards.
AND I get to mix them with Locally Grown Tulips in citrus tones like the bright orange variety "Orange Juice" and the magnificent double watermelon variety "Erne Lindgren" pictured above.

FROM THE GREENHOUSE TO YOUR HOUSE...

LOCALLY GROWN MINIATURE CYMBIDIUM ORCHIDS

Each stem is suspended from an individual line to produce the long, strong, and straight stems we all want... There are hundreds of thousands of these stems all connected to various suspension & watering systems throughout this greenhouse in Delta.

Hybrids & new colours take many years if not decades to produce on a commercial level & our local growers are constantly moving forward to develop various hybrids & colours that are in bloom throughout different seasons locally.

This miniature white variety named "Elfin" is a particular favourite of mine.

SHADES OF WHITE, BLACK, and GREY....A very cool mix of white Elfin Orchids & natural black river stones is ready to be delivered to a Point Grey home this afternoon.

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games

One of our last jobs at these fantastic Winter Olympic Games is the decor of the private VIP suite for tonight's closing ceremonies. ..
(and same as the opening ceremony, we had police escorts to bring the flowers in....what a scream!)

When you hear that having the Olympics in your hometown is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity, it really is true! Thank you to the International Olympic Committee, VANOC, Shaw, Visa, The Vancouver Club, The Olympic Club, and all of our fabulous clients who have kept us so busy the last 3 weeks...

I loved every second of it!

I wouldn't have missed it for the world....

Today we are recovering from Valenine's Day & are in full prep mode for our next two events tomorrow & wednesday...we are also working on several private homes & smaller dinner parties.

This entrance table arrangement is composed of Snowball Vibernum, Bells of Ireland, Green Jade Trachellium, and Green Tea Roses. The three centre pieces are a mix of Snowball Vibernum and Green Trick Dianthus, with a variegated Calathea leaf wrap.

I have always loved the red Rose....for a myriad of reasons....I think of

Coco Chanel, Collette, Paloma Picasso, and in a completely unrelated way, Dorothy Parker and Georgia O'Keefe. I think of stained red lips on Marilyn Monroe, and blood on dreamy young Edward (the vampire's) tongue.

(and I actually did personally do the flowers for New Moon & Eclipse)

According to Greek Mythology, The petals of the Rose were stained red from the immortal blood of Aphrodite, when she scratched herself on their thorns as she rushed to comfort her wounded lover Adonis.

After 30 years in retail, you don't always love everyone you deal with on a daily basis. It's a fact of life. Most are great, some are impossible and a very few are just so wonderful.

Sometimes clients are so kind and easy and fun that when I see them walking down the stairs into my store, I put everything else aside and just enjoy them.

Harvey came in on Saturdays, and loved flowers. He would come in and chat and browse and ask questions and listen, and be interested, and ulimately, be interesting. Harvey was a funny, kind and gentle soul. He was an Orchid kind of guy, which in my world is a cool thing...
I knew that Harvey worked on Battlestar Galactica, but it wasn't until after he passed that I realized he was"The Producer". I didn't know much about his personal life, and we weren't great friends...but I miss him & Saturdays haven't been the same since he's been gone.

When I am arranging the Orchids for his Vancouver memorial this weekend, I will be remembering him, and thinking of how he touched so many people in such a beautiful way.

My sincere sympathy to Bill, and all of Harvey's family & friends.

A Pink Rose Wedding at Cecil green....

Last weekend we had a part in decorating Cecil green Park House for the wedding of Darren & Francesca...A sea of 1200 stems of Sweet Avalanche Roses locally grown in our own Fraser Valley, along with another thousand combined stems of locally grown white Avalanche Roses, celery green Annabelle Hydrangea, white Hydrangea,and pink Winter Berry plus (imported from northern California) heavenly scented Stephanotis blossoms.

We worked with Maurizio & David of Debut Event Designs to transform the rooms into a romantic setting based on the traditional & romantic floral paintings of traditional Cuban cigar boxes God is in the details....

Cake by Indulgence Desserts...Decor by Debut Events, Flowers by Hilary Miles, and photography by the lovely Tristan Casey.

Well, summer is drawing to a close....and sadly that means the inevitable end of Dahlia season in Vancouver. We should have availability for the next few weeks, but with less choice in colours & varieties. The variety pictured above is called an "Apricot Pom Pom" and are just the most precious little flowers. They are about 6cm across & comprised of many perfect little spoon shaped petals. With a vase life of 4-7 days, and an average price of $1.00 each they are a great way to brighten up the house as the clouds roll in!

Today we "did the flowers" for Angela's Wedding...she had a small gathering of her closest friends and family at her beautiful home in Kits Point. My very favourite kind of celebration...intimate with all the very best friends, wines, food, and flowers.

In this photo I am holding Angela's teardrop bouquet of bright yellows, chartreuse, and ivory....

Yellow and white South American Roses, Yellow Freesia, Ivory and celery green Dendrobium Orchids, and Chartreuse Cymbidium Orchids with bright yellow throats. Angela's bouquet was wired and bound in oyster white ribbon and detailed with pearl pins.
I LOVED this wedding...

On May 23rd, My head designer, (and one of my favourite people in the world) married her long time boyfriend Doug, at Hycroft Mansion (University Womens Club)
Lydia's Bouquet was a mix of fruity shades of tangerine, watermelon, raspberry & lime.

The "family" flowers...each member of the family wore a "Cherry Brandy" Rose
(all 72 of them!)
The Groom & his party wore miniature chartreuse Cymbidium Orchids with deer moss detailing...
The Bridesmaids Bouquets were a bit smaller, and didn't have the touch of Chartreuse...we saved that for Lydia! All the bouquets were wired and bound in ivory satin ribbon, with French chiffon bow details.

Oh my God I have been waiting for these photos for almost a year! Last September I was asked to do a bouquet for a cover shoot of Real Weddings Magazine Fall/Winter Issue and came up with this bright red Vibernum Berry bouquet detailed in 4" moss green double faced satin ribbon.

Yesterday, On what would have been Arthur Erickson's 85th birthday, along with all the people who loved and admired him, I said goodbye at his memorial service held at one of his finest accomplishments...Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. Although Arthur is gone, his home & garden will be maintained and open to the public. Guided tours of the garden have begun for the season:

Every Thursday at 5:00 PM until October 29 (reserve 24 hours in advance);

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for a minimum of 4 people (reserve 2 weeks in advance).
